gender and media essays

gender and media essays Nowadays, advertisements cannot be separated from our daily live. Our consuming behaviour is closely affected by these advertisements. From the process of consumption, we can fulfil our desires and the pleasure of consumption as well. To increase the sales of the products, a successful advertising strategy is very important. Due to commercialism, advertisers differentiate their products with different advertising approaches, in different target audience. In this paper, I will focus on advertising approaches commonly appeared in Hong Kong womans magazine (Cosmopolitan). Through the analysis of them, I try to find out the binary division of gender roles in the specific approach. Stereotype of gender, here is defined as a set of inaccurate, simplistic generalizations about groups of individuals. Also, the binary division of gender induces different approaches of advertising, such as romance, autonomy and sexual approaches. In this paper, I would focus on the category of advertisemen t target on Female consumers in womans magazine. The advertisement (refer to Green post-it 1) is also an advertisement of a jewellery chain store that is called Chow Tai Fok. There is one lady and three men in this advertisement, the lady with larger size displays on the left hand side whereas the man with smaller size displays on the right hand side. Those men hold a bunch of flowers and want to touch the woman whereas she points out her body figure without any facial expression at a diamond ring on her finger. Those men look at the woman with an admire scene. Meanwhile, the advertising background focuses on a lady in the middle class. Using the concept of courtship can address their group. The advertisement is vague setting with dark environment. The woman, who has stood in the middle of the men, by showing her powerful. In addition, female is meddlesome, for instance, the woman like to put her finger on her body while other people around ...

Downloading Music essays

Downloading Music essays Downloading Music: Useful or Harmful? Napster, the original creator of free music shareware over the internet, developed a concept that changed the music industry and the consumption of music forever. Napster enabled users to download music from a certain artist in order for them to hear what the artist sounded like before purchasing the entire compact disc. However, people who downloaded a particular artists entire CD so they would not have to buy it abused this revolutionary concept. While this was not Napster's wish, there was very little they could do to monitor it. The music industry quickly discovered Napster's free distribution of copyrighted material and took them to court. While Napster fought for the relatively new way to obtain music over the internet, the music industry countered them claiming it was wrong to give away music for free and would inevitably cut into the entire music industries profits. How often does a person buy an entire CD just for one song? What is the harm of downloading just one song? Does downloading only one song from a CD even hurt the music industrys profits? These are the types of questions answered in Downloading Music: Who Gets Hurt? by Carlton Vogt, a columnist for the InfoWorld website, written on May 4, 2001. Vogt believes he holds a neutral position in the Napster debate due to "never purchasing music or downloading it off the internet." However, his article seems to support the Napster concept. Vogt states that Napster can actually benefit artists. Due to the fact that users can hear the song, decide if they like it, and then recommend it to friends or buy the artist's next CD themselves. Therefore, furthering album sales. This would not be possible without somehow first being introduced to an artist. Vogt deems that not purchasing a CD in a store because you are unfamiliar with the artist actually ...

Critical Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Critical Analysis - Essay Example We can draw such a conclusion because he is asking his wife if she is reading the letter while in his mom’s presence. This can be found in the beginning of the song, when he sings â€Å""If youre reading this and my mamas sitting there†¦" The soldier hopes that his family will read his letter, so they can know about what has happened to him, as well as receive reassurance and encouragement to go on. The diction that Tim McGraw uses in his song portrays two different tones. The tones are of sadness, as well as encouragement. The words that he uses to portray sadness is when he is talking about how he will not be able to give his wife another kiss and how he cannot be there to witness the birth of his little girl. He also talks about how he will no longer be there to spend the rest of his life with her. Though he has told her this, she gives his wife encouragement. He tells her that it is okay to move on and be with someone else. He offers reassurance to his wife and his family that he is okay up in heaven and is at peace. NO longer is he being tormented by war. NO longer is he hurting. In addition to the point of view diction that Tim McGraw uses to get his strong and powerful message across to his listeners, he also uses allusions to speak of the dead soldier’s spiritual state. For instance, Tim McGraw makes a reference to the child’s prayer by singing â€Å"Now I lay me down† meaning that he is talking to God, and his family should also do the same. The reference to this prayer can also mean that he is resting in peace, no longer suffering from the ravages of war. Tim McGraw also makes references to heaven, as his song contains a line that states that he is with God watching down on his wife, his family, and his unborn baby girl. Finally, Tim McGraw references the Christian hymn, Amazing Grace. This reference is to pain the picture how powerful the Christian hope is and how it can get one through the trials of losing someone. Furthermore, it provides

Technology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 5

Technology - Essay Example Then, interestingly enough, those units quadruple (increase by 400%) over the next 10 years. After that, over the next ten years, the figure doubles. So, it would be very interesting to know that the types of units the x-axis is measuring are actually years, as we are very sure at this point—which of course does help us in analyzing what the figures are trying to tell us. In fact, these numbers tell a curious story. The results on the y-axis show—unlike the x-axis, not the units of years—but rather the references (as benchmarks) staggered out. Every ten years marks a benchmark in references, because within that time frame is when a new dot is placed on the chart. Now, for the first three decades on the chart starting in the 1940s, there was absolutely no growth. Then, we see in the decade 1970-1980 there is a slight uptick in activity, with activity shooting up in exponential increments in the two decades to follow. It would be interesting to any reader to know that the kind of units on the x-axis were actually measured in years if they hadn’t already figured it out by mere deduction, so much so that there were two decades of exceedingly rapid growth of references being bought, sold, or produced, etc., in technology. The possibilities of how we could analyze all these data are really endless, but the most interesting part yet remains to be seen: the analysis of the results, which will be discussed in the following section. The analysis of the results are basically as follows. The references to technology that were being sold, bought, or traded dramatically increased within the last two decades, but which had only started an uptick about three decades ago. Unfortunately, at this time it’s not completely sure what the units of the x-axis were supposed to be designated to be if anything other than just years. Luckily, however, that is not necessarily needful for us to know

Childrens Functional Health Pattern Assessment Essay Example for Free

Childrens Functional Health Pattern Assessment Essay The U.S. health care delivery system has gone through enormous and transformational changes in the past two decades. The traditional hospital-centered health care delivery is no longer able to support the expanded demands of health care services, especially outside hospitals. In the same token, the traditional role of a nurse as bedside direct caregiver is insufficient to meet the accelerating needs of nurses in other areas, such as health promotion and disease prevention, case management, leadership and research. As a result of that, preparation of the entry-level of professional nurses requires a broader competencies so that nurses are educationally prepared to function with more independence in delivering diversified care. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) recognized the Bachelor of Science degree in nursing as the minimum educational requirement for professional nursing practice (AACN, 2000). There are significant differences between associate degree nursing programs and baccalaureate degree nursing programs. The baccalaureate program not only include all of curriculum in the associate degree programs, but also provides in-depth study in physical and social sciences, nursing research, leadership and management, community and public health nursing, patient education, and the humanities (Johnston, 2009). The broader and more in-depth education enhance professional development and critical thinking. The baccalaureate graduate is prepared to better understand many issues in culture, society, economy and politics. Such skills are essential for todays nursing professionals. In clinical practice, associate degree nurses provide bedside care in less complex situation while baccalaureate degree nurses design and manage a comprehensive plan of care. They understand more in patients signs and symptoms, supervise other nursing personnel, support staff, and guide patients through the complicated health care resources in a community, and educate patients on health care options and advanced directives . Over the past several years, researchers and policymakers have identified that educational preparation does make a huge difference in how nurses practice. Johnsons (1988) meta-analysis indicated that there were  significant differences between professional (baccalaureate degree) and technical (associate degree and diploma) nurses on measures of nurse performance. Measures included communication skills, knowledge, problem-solving, and professional role. Pardue (1987) investigated the differences in critical thinking ability and decision-making skills among 121 associate degree, diploma, baccalaureate, and masters prepared nurses. Results indicated that nurses with masters and baccalaureate degrees had the highest scores in critical thinking ability. In my hospital the ICU nurses are BSNs, and they are responsible for patient education in addition to providing bedside care. An example of a patient care situation that was positively affected by having a BSN nurse available, recently occurred at the department where I work. A 37 year-old lady who is a post-liver transplant patient was admitted to the ICU for organ rejection and severe anemia. The medication compliance issue was brought up by the resident doctors. The ICU nurse provided medication reconciliation and discovered that patient often missed Prednisone. The nurse therefore spent more time on educating post-transplant immunosuppressant medications and reinforcing the importance to be compliant with medication regimen. The patient finally confessed that Prednisone made her gain lots of weight, which was the main reason why she did not take this medication. The nurse researched clinical evidence based on patients primary diagnosis and corresponded medical treatment options. She realized that patient has a diagnosis of recurrent autoimmune hepatitis and Prednisone is one of medications that treat autoimmune disease. The ICU nurse called out a meeting with the multidisciplinary team included the transplant social worker, pharmacist, nutritionist, nurse practitioners and surgeons. Patient and her care giver husband were also invited to the discussion of the plan for her care. Because of the shared decision making, the transplant team agreed to lower her Prednisone dose to the minimum and add a small dose of diuretic to avoid water retention caused by Prednisone. Through social workers help, patient agreed to take Prednisone every day and her husband promised to remind her to take the medication. Nutritionist provided consultation in fluid and salt restriction. This example demonstrated that the baccalaureate degree nurse was well prepared to understand the pathophysiology and disease process. She conducted research study and obtained the best available evidence in reference to patients care. Finally she used her coordination and collaboration skills and gathered a meeting of the multidisciplinary team and patients family. She also demonstrated a strong leadership skill in case management. She placed patient at the center of the care and approached to a shared decision-making. Without any doubt, her performance is a result of the educational preparation she received from the baccalaureate nursing program. If this case was handled by an associated degree nurse, her educational skill sets might not have prepare her to fulfill the task. References - American Association of College of Nursing (2000). Satellites :: essays research papers

Satellites Satellite is probably the most useful invention since the wheel. Satellites have the capability to let you talk with someone across the nation or let you close a business deal through video communication. Almost everything today is heading towards the use of satellites, such as telephones. At&t has used this communications satellite (top right) ever since the late 1950s. TVS and radios are also turning to the use of satellites. RCA and Sony have released satellite dishes for Radio and Television services. New technology also allows the military to use satellites as a weapon. The new ION cannon is a satellite that can shoot a particle beam anywhere on earth and create an earthquake. They can also use it's capability for imaging enhancement, which allows you to zoom in on someone's nose hairs all the way from space.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Robert Gossard (left) was one of the most integral inventors of the satellite. He was born on October 5, 1882. He earned his Masters and Doctoral degree in Physics at Clark University. He conducted research on improving solid- propellant rockets. He is known best for firing the world's first successful liquid-propellant rocket on March 16, 1926. This was a simple pressure-fed rocket that burned gasoline and liquid oxygen. It traveled only 56m (184 ft) but proved to the world that the principle was valid. Gossard Died August 10, 1945. Gossard did not work alone, he was also in partnership with a Russian theorist named Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. Tsiolkovsky was born on September 7, 1857. As a child Tsiolkovsky educated himself and rose to become a High School teacher of mathematics in the small town of Kaluga, 145km (90mi) south of Moscow. In his early years Tsiolkovsky caught scarlet fever and became 80% deaf. Together, the theoretical work of Russian Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and the experimental work of American Robert Gossard, confirmed that a satellite might be launched by means of a rocket.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I chose the satellite to research because many things such as computers, TVS and telephones are using satellites, and I thought it would be a good idea to figure out how they work and the history behind them before we start to use them more rapidly. I also picked the satellite because I think that my life would differ without it. For instance, The Internet or World Wide Web would run very slowly or would cease to exist altogether. We wouldn't be able to talk to people across the world because telephone wires would have to travel across the Atlantic, and if they did, the reception would be horrible. We wouldn't know
